Safety First!
Make sure to complete the experiment away from any valuables such as outside due to the mess (i.e. grass, driveway over a sheet or tarp etc.). Make sure to wash your hands before starting the project. And remember to HAVE FUN!
Materials Needed
10 ml of dish soap
200 ml of cold water
400 ml of white vinegar
Food colouring
Baking soda slurry (fill a cup about 1/2 with baking soda, then fill the rest of the way with water)
Empty a 2-liter soda bottle
How it works:
A chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda creates a gas called carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is the same type of gas used to make the carbonation in soda.
What happens when you shake soda and take the lid off? It EXPLODES! This is because the gas tries to spread out and does not have enough room to spread out, so it leaves through the opening very quickly, causing an eruption similar to the one we will be making.
What to Do
Gather all your materials
Set up your station in an area that can get messy
Combine the vinegar, water, dish soap and 2 drops of food colouring in the empty soda bottle
In a separate cup, use a spoon to mix the baking soda slurry (1/2 cup baking soda and water) until it is all a liquid
Eruption time! … Pour the baking soda slurry into the soda bottle quickly and step back!
Extra Experiments:
Does the amount of vinegar change the eruption?
Does the amount of water change the eruption?
Does the amount of baking soda change the eruption?
