Meet Darius & Silas
"I am going to try to put into words how we feel about Camp Quality, but I won’t do it justice. Camp Quality is just that - Quality of life!
When we were told that Darius’s cancer is terminal and his days are numbered, they also told us to focus on quality of life. And that is what Camp Quality has done for us. Darius looks forward to going to camp and experiencing new things and making amazing memories in a safe and inclusive environment. Even though Darius is partly non verbal, he has a way to communicate how much fun he has at camp with all his friends. These memories are important to us, and especially to his older brother Silas, as in the past and future there will be our share of unpleasant memories that will be overshadowed by these amazing camp memories.
I love that siblings get to be celebrated and included as an important part of camp.
Silas really enjoyed having his own experience and everyone made him feel like he was an amazing guy and wonderful big brother. Silas always feels
comfortable speaking up for himself at camp as he has developed such trust with the volunteers. Every time we pick him up at the end of camp we see his confidence has increased, and this is heartwarming, especially during these awkward teenage times. Both brothers have made such great friends, and we have formed connections with other families as we are all a part of the Camp Quality experience.
Now for us, my husband and I can say that camp gives us strength. It gives us a week to focus on us. A week to go back and enjoy ourselves.
Even though we constantly worry, it will be easier next year! To be able to send both our kids and know that everything is going to be ok is a blessing. They have the most amazing adventures to share with us afterwards. We look forward to connecting with the Camp Quality group during the winter and spring reunions and have such a wonderful time. It keeps us connected, which is especially important for Darius as he needs to have these experiences in his life. Thank you Camp Quality for the memories and the opportunity for us to watch our kids grow alongside their CQ friends."
